I am very happy with my dentist, Kitty. After deliberating for a long time about switching dentists, I ended up at Kitty’s practice. After thoroughly cleaning my teeth due to periodontitis, which the previous dentist had not noticed, Kitty placed an implant in my lower jaw last year. Following a thorough explanation, the treatment began and the results were excellent. This year, I had a bridge fitted to my upper jaw. I am so satisfied! It’s a pleasant, no-nonsense practice. — Tineke Verhoeff
Rest assured that at Tandzorg Kralingen, you will be treated by dentists who adhere to the highest quality and professional standards.

What is an implant?
It is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. The dentist then attaches a replacement tooth to the implant. Examples of these replacements include crowns, bridges and snap-on dentures. Implant-supported replacements are a functional, permanent solution that is indistinguishable from real teeth.
When should I have an implant fitted?
If you are missing one or more teeth, implants combined with a crown, bridge or prosthesis are a good way to fill the empty spaces. We fit implants in the following situations:
- In the absence of a single tooth;
If you are missing a single tooth, the dentist will place a crown on the implant. - In the absence of multiple teeth;
If you have multiple missing teeth, the dentist will place a bridge on the implants. A bridge consists of multiple crowns that replace your missing teeth. - In the absence of all teeth;
When all your teeth are missing, the dentist will place two implants in your jawbone, which will be connected with a bar. An artificial or snap-on denture will then be clicked onto the implant. The denture replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw.
Are my teeth suitable for implants?
Implants can be placed in anyone who has finished growing. However, there are certain conditions you must meet:
- There must be sufficient jawbone present;
During the first appointment, the implantologist will take an X-ray to assess this. If not, artificial bone can be added prior to or during the placement of the implants. - The gums around your natural teeth must be healthy;
If your implant dentist determines that your gums are unhealthy, you will need to undergo gum treatment before implants can be placed. - You must be prepared to clean your implants regularly, keep them as clean as possible and visit the dental hygienist.
Please note that certain habits, such as alcohol consumption and smoking, can negatively impact the success of the treatment.
The treatment: placing implants
We place implants in the following manner:
- Before the dental implantologist begins treatment, you will be anaesthetised.
- They will make a small incision in your gum to expose the jawbone where the implant is to be placed.
- The implantologist then drills a hole in the jawbone and screws the implant into it.
- They then place a high or low cover cap on the implant. After suturing, a higher cover cap will protrude above the gums, while a lower cover cap will be hidden under them. The type of cap used depends on the treatment. The lower cap is replaced once the implant has fused with the jawbone. This process often takes several months.
- Once the implant has been placed, the dental implantologist sutures the gums.
- Two weeks later, an appointment is made to remove the sutures.
If you require more than one implant, we prefer to place them all at the same time.

After the treatment
Once the implants have been placed, any pain and swelling will be minimal, enabling you to resume your normal routine the following day. If your teeth are sensitive afterwards, you can, of course, take painkillers. Your dental implantologist will be able to advise you in detail on the best measures to take.
When you leave our practice after treatment, we will always provide you with a temporary solution for your mouth. This means that you will never leave our practice with a missing tooth.
Aftercare
Maintaining good oral hygiene, undergoing thorough cleaning and attending regular check-ups with the dentist are important after placement. Your dental implantologist will arrange an appointment to assess your teeth after treatment. He will check:
- The health of your gums;
- The condition of the jawbone surrounding the implant(s);
- The status of the crown, bridge, or artificial or snap-on denture.
Implant costs
The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) sets nationwide rates for dental care. The cost of treatment depends on the number of implants required and your health insurance policy. Frequently asked questions about implants
We often receive questions from patients about implants. Below, we have compiled and answered the most frequently asked questions.
Is implant treatment painful?
You will be given a local anaesthetic beforehand. This means that you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.
How long does the implant treatment take?
The duration depends on the complexity of the procedure and the number of implants required. We will draw up a treatment plan in advance, after which the implantologist will be able to provide more information about the expected duration. Once an implant has been placed, it takes between six weeks and several months for it to heal. After that, we can fit the crown, bridge or snap-on denture.
What should I bear in mind following the treatment?
You may experience swelling and discolouration after the treatment. You may also experience some pain afterwards, for which you will be given medication. These symptoms are normal. However, if you have any concerns about your recovery, you can always contact the implantologist.
