What are braces?

Braces are a type of orthodontic appliance made up of metal brackets. Treatment involves attaching the brackets to the teeth. A metal wire is then threaded through them to form a complete system. The wire’s thickness varies, and the brackets are made of metal. There is also a variant available in the form of ceramic braces, which are less noticeable due to their white colour. However, ceramic braces are weaker and there is a risk of discolouration. Furthermore, white brackets are more expensive.

Braces on the upper and lower teeth

In most cases, braces are fitted to both sets of teeth. The metal wire is springy and pushes the teeth into the desired position. Braces are not removable and must therefore be worn at all times. In exceptional cases, brackets may only be placed on some of the teeth. After a check-up, you may experience some pain or sensitivity. This is because the old wire has been replaced with a new one that pushes the teeth further into position. After treatment, a splint is placed behind your teeth to keep them in position.
