Costs and reimbursement of crowns
The cost of a crown depends on the type of crown, the material used, and the fees charged by the dental laboratory. Ask for a cost estimate before treatment begins. Our dentist can provide you with detailed advice and information.
Reimbursement for the placement of one or more crowns depends on your dental insurance policy. Contact your health insurer to find out which treatments are covered.
The treatment involves fitting crowns and bridges
This involves several steps. You will need to visit the dentist several times. In addition, crowns and bridges are made in a dental laboratory. This process takes one to two weeks. We have outlined the treatment steps below:
1. Pre-treatment
Before a crown or bridge can be placed, the tooth must be ground down. This creates space around the tooth for the crown or bridge to be fitted. If necessary, a local anaesthetic will be administered.
2. Your jaw imprint
During step two of the treatment, an impression of your jaw will be taken. This will be either a full jaw impression or an impression of the jaw where the ground tooth or molar is located. To take the impression, you will need to bite down on a tray containing impression material. The dental laboratory will use this impression to create a plaster model of your jaw. They will then use this model to create your crown or bridge.
3. Your bite registration
A wax plate is used during bite registration to determine how your teeth fit together. An impression of the opposing jaw is taken to record the bite, which is required for the manufacture of the crown or bridge later on.
4. Determining the colour
The location of the crown or bridge partly determines its colour. If a crown or bridge is to be placed at the front of your mouth, it will often have a white, tooth-coloured outer layer. You can discuss your desired colour with your dentist.
5. Temporary protection for your ground tooth
To protect your ground tooth, you will be given a temporary crown. Please avoid eating hard or sticky foods, as these can damage or dislodge the temporary crown.
6. Securing crowns or bridges
The final step of the treatment involves securing the crown or bridge. The dentist will place it in your mouth and position it over the prepared tooth or molar before securing it in place. This is done using a type of cement that sets extremely quickly.
7. A superstructure
If your tooth does not provide enough support for a crown or bridge, your dentist will need to create a build-up. This build-up is placed in the root canal and can then be used to attach a crown or bridge.
Client experiences
I’ve known dentist Van Luijk since the beginning, and she’s great. I wouldn’t go to any other dentist. She is kind, a good listener and puts you at ease. Having a crown fitted was completely painless because she simply gave me an anaesthetic. Anonymous
I always receive a warm welcome and clear explanations about the treatment process. My dentist is someone who listens, explains things, and clearly takes the time to help me. Anonymous

What is a crown?
It is a cap that is placed over an implant or a ground-down tooth. They are usually made of metal or porcelain and cemented onto the implant or tooth. This means that you can use your teeth as normal, even if they have a crown.
When do I need a crown?
A crown may be necessary in the following cases:
- Insufficient support for a filling;
- To improve the appearance of your teeth.
How long do crowns last?
How long do crowns last? This is one of the most common questions asked at the dentist’s. The lifespan of a crown depends on various factors, such as the material used and your oral hygiene routine. Nowadays, all crowns are made of durable materials, meaning the average crown lasts at least ten years. They are used as a long-lasting replacement for teeth.

When do I need a bridge?
If you are missing one or more teeth, we recommend getting a bridge. If you don’t, your remaining teeth may grow towards the empty space, causing them to become crooked. Having a bridge fitted is a good way to prevent this. Bridges ensure that:
- You can chew better;
- Your teeth are more aesthetically pleasing;
- Teeth do not grow out and do not become crooked.
Are there different types of bridges?
There are several types, and your dentist will recommend the most suitable one for you. You can choose from a conventional bridge, a cantilever bridge or an etch bridge.
The ordinary bridge
An ordinary bridge consists of a series of artificial elements, with the structure supported by two pillars and spanning an open space.
The free-end bridge
In this type of bridge, the abutments are located on one side of the missing tooth or molar.
The etching bridge
An etch bridge is mainly used when the teeth on either side of the gap are intact enough. The advantage of this type of bridge is that hardly any of the intact teeth need to be ground down. It is bonded to the inside of the teeth using metal attachment plates.
