Treating a toothache

Dental pain should be treated by a dentist as soon as possible. The treatment you receive will depend on the underlying cause. To determine this, the dentist will usually take an X-ray of your teeth. They will then draw up a personalised treatment plan to relieve your toothache as quickly as possible.

The following are common treatments for toothache or dental pain:

Toothache or dental pain caused by caries/cavities

If your toothache is caused by a cavity, the dentist will clean and fill the tooth. If this is no longer possible, however, the tooth will need to be extracted. To fill the resulting space, a crown or implant can be placed.

A toothache or dental pain can be caused by gum inflammation.

If you have gum inflammation, the dentist will remove any plaque or tartar. If the plaque or tartar is located deep beneath the gums, the dentist will perform flap surgery to remove it.

Toothache or dental pain caused by inflammation of the root canal

If you have inflamed roots, the dentist will need to perform a root canal treatment. This involves removing the nerve that is causing the pain in order to treat the inflammation and eliminate the toothache. You can read more about root canal treatment at Tandzorg Kralingen.

A toothache or dental pain can be caused by wisdom teeth

Crookedly growing wisdom teeth can cause toothache. A dentist or oral surgeon can remove these teeth to remedy the pain.

Frequently asked questions about toothache and dental pain

How can I prevent toothache?

Prevention is better than cure. Therefore, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene and visit the dentist at least twice a year for a regular check-up. Visiting the dental hygienist regularly also reduces the risk of toothache. In addition, here are a few more tips for maintaining good oral health:

Brush twice a day

To prevent tooth decay, it is important to brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day. This removes bacteria, plaque and food debris, thereby preventing tooth erosion

Use the right toothbrush

Use a toothbrush with a soft brush head to protect your gums and replace your toothbrush every three months. It is not necessary to brush hard to get clean teeth, so brush your teeth gently but thoroughly.

Fluoride toothpaste

There are many different types of toothpaste on the market. It is important that your toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and reduces the risk of cavities.

Consider your diet

Your diet has a significant impact on your oral health. Therefore, avoid or reduce your intake of foods that are harmful to your teeth. These include fruit juices, soft drinks, sugar, and sweets. Good alternatives include milk, tea, water, yoghurt, vegetables, and cheese.

How long will my mouth remain sensitive after a filling?

After a filling, you may experience pain for a few days, especially if the filling is close to the root of the tooth. On average, this pain will subside after two to three days, depending on the type of treatment. In the case of root canal treatment, you may experience residual pain for up to two weeks after the treatment. If the pain persists, it is advisable to contact us for further assessment and advice.

How many painkillers may I take for toothache?

We understand that inflammation can be painful. The maximum recommended dose of your painkillers varies per medication and per person. Read the package leaflet of your painkillers carefully to find out how many painkillers you are allowed to take.

What causes mouth ulcers?

Mouth ulcers are one of the most common mucosal abnormalities of the mouth. It is estimated that 20 to 30% of people will suffer from mouth ulcers at some point in their lives. Despite extensive research, the exact cause of these ulcers is still unknown. However, there are a number of factors that can contribute to their development. We will highlight the most commonly cited factors below.

Infection with a virus or bacteria

Mouth ulcers are caused by viruses or bacteria. You are particularly susceptible to this type of infection if your immune system is weakened. Mouth ulcers can also be a side effect of taking medication that suppresses the immune system.

Poor oral hygiene

Mouth ulcers can be caused by dental problems or poor oral hygiene. A small wound in the mouth can develop into a mouth ulcer. Such wounds can be caused by brushing too hard, wearing braces, accidentally biting the inside of your cheek or eating hot food.

Chronic conditions

Another cause of mouth ulcers is chronic health conditions that make the mouth more susceptible to infection. Examples of such conditions include intestinal disorders such as coeliac disease and Crohn’s disease.

Chemotherapie

Chemotherapy is a treatment for cancer. However, the medication used in chemotherapy can affect the oral mucosa, increasing the risk of mouth ulcers and sores.

Recognising mouth ulcers

A mouth ulcer is a small, painful ulcer in the mouth, often recognisable as a greyish-white or yellowish spot surrounded by red, inflamed tissue. They usually occur on the inside of the cheeks or lips, under the tongue, on the gums or on the roof of the mouth. Initially, they may resemble a blister, but this quickly turns into an open sore. A canker sore can be extra sensitive when eating or drinking acidic or hot foods, for example, causing a stinging pain.

Treatment of mouth ulcers

Although there is no treatment for mouth ulcers, they usually disappear on their own within 14 days. To prevent further irritation, it is important to be careful when brushing your teeth and eating. Are you experiencing a lot of pain? Pain-relieving gels are available from pharmacies and drugstores to help reduce discomfort.

What should be done about an mouth ulcers?

1.Avoid spicy foods

Spicy foods such as curries and seasoned dishes can exacerbate mouth ulcer pain. They sting and irritate the sensitive area. Until the ulcer has healed, it is preferable to choose soft, mild meals.

2. Avoid eating hard or sharp foods.

Hard foods such as crackers and toast can irritate ulcers and slow down the healing process. Therefore, choose soft foods such as yoghurt or soup to prevent irritation.

3. Eat carefully

Try to put as little strain on your gums as possible while eating. Chew slowly and avoid letting food come into direct contact with the sensitive area.

4. Avoid acidic drinks

If you have an aphthous ulcer, soft drinks, fruit juices (such as orange juice) and other acidic drinks can sting quite badly. To prevent irritation, it is better to choose water or mild drinks.

5. Brush gently

It can be difficult to avoid discomfort while brushing, but you can minimise it by using a soft toothbrush. Brush gently and avoid pressing too hard.

6. Do not touch the mouth ulcers

Although it may be tempting, try not to touch the dressing with your tongue or fingers, as this will slow down the healing process. Try to keep your hands off it as much as possible.

7. Take paracetamol if necessary

If the pain from the mouth ulce is causing you significant discomfort, consider taking paracetamol to help alleviate the symptoms.

8. Oral gel containing lidocaine.

If you are experiencing severe pain, a mouth gel containing lidocaine can offer some relief. This gel temporarily relieves pain and is best applied just before eating. You can purchase this gel from a pharmacy.

Recurring mouth ulcers

Do you often get mouth ulcers? Contact Tandartspraktijk Kralingen to find out what is causing them. Be careful with prolonged use of alcohol-based mouthwashes. Using alcohol regularly can damage the oral mucosa, increasing the risk of small wounds and mouth ulcers.

Mouth ulcers in children

Canker sores are common in children. Does your child have them? Make an appointment to find out what is causing them. You should also contact your family doctor if:

  • The mouth ulcers last for more than two weeks.
  • The child also has a fever and is unwell.
  • The child is under two years old and is not drinking enough water.
  • The child has stomach or intestinal problems.

Here is our advice for dealing with mouth ulcers:

You can often prevent the development and spread of mouth ulcers by maintaining a strong immune system. Eat a healthy and varied diet, exercise for at least 1.5 hours a day, and ensure you get enough sleep. In addition, good oral hygiene is essential to prevent wounds, inflammation, and mouth ulcers. Our dentists and dental hygienists will be happy to provide you with more information. Register as a new patient at Tandzorg Kralingen or make an appointment right away.

Frequently asked questions about mouth ulcers

What causes mouth ulcers?

The exact cause of mouth ulcers is unknown, but they often develop as a result of minor mouth injuries, such as biting your cheek or brushing your teeth too vigorously. Other factors that can play a role include stress, reduced immunity, certain foods, and poorly fitting dentures.

What vitamin are you not getting enough of if you have mouth ulcers?

A deficiency in vitamin B12, iron, or folic acid can contribute to the development of mouth ulcers in some cases. However, this is not always the cause, as mouth ulcers can also be caused by other factors, such as stress or small wounds in the mouth. Are you unsure whether a vitamin deficiency is playing a role in your case? Discuss this with your dentist or doctor.

Are mouth ulcers a health hazard?

Mouth ulcers are not dangerous to your health. However, if you have canker sores and a high fever, you should contact your doctor and/or dentist, as this could indicate an infectious disease.

When should I consult a dentist about a mouth ulcer?

We recommend that you contact your dentist if the ulcer has not disappeared within two weeks. You should also contact your dentist or dental hygienist if you suffer from frequent mouth ulcers. The specialists at Kralingen Dental Practice will be able to determine the cause of your ulcers and remedy the problem if possible.

Are there any medicines available to treat mouth ulcers?

There are no medicines that can cure mouth ulcers. However, products such as GUM and Lactona can provide pain relief.

Braces are an ideal solution for straightening crooked teeth and achieving a beautiful smile. This method of straightening teeth is one of the most well-known. Braces consist of small blocks, known as brackets, which are placed on the teeth to be treated. These brackets are made of metal and are placed on each tooth individually. Would you like to know more about this dental treatment? Please feel free to contact Tandzorg Kralingen via 010 414 2248 or fill in the contact form.

    What are braces?

Braces are a type of orthodontic appliance made up of metal brackets. Treatment involves attaching the brackets to the teeth. A metal wire is then threaded through them to form a complete system. The wire’s thickness varies, and the brackets are made of metal. There is also a variant available in the form of ceramic braces, which are less noticeable due to their white colour. However, ceramic braces are weaker and there is a risk of discolouration. Furthermore, white brackets are more expensive.

Braces on the upper and lower teeth

In most cases, braces are fitted to both sets of teeth. The metal wire is springy and pushes the teeth into the desired position. Braces are not removable and must therefore be worn at all times. In exceptional cases, brackets may only be placed on some of the teeth. After a check-up, you may experience some pain or sensitivity. This is because the old wire has been replaced with a new one that pushes the teeth further into position. After treatment, a splint is placed behind your teeth to keep them in position.

    Working method Dental Care Kralingen

    Initial consultation

The first step is an initial consultation to determine whether braces are the most suitable option for the patient’s oral health needs. If so, a treatment plan will be drawn up and X-rays and photographs will be taken. Creating a dental model is also part of the process.

    Braces fitting

An appointment will be made for this. It will then take up to a week for you to get used to them.

    Regular check-ups

You will return periodically for check-ups. After an average of two years, you will be fitted with a splint behind your teeth to ensure lasting results.

    Cost of braces

The cost of having braces fitted depends on various factors. For example, it depends on whether the brackets are fitted to both the upper and lower teeth, or to just a few teeth. Following the initial consultation, we can provide an estimate of the costs.

    Reimbursement for braces

It is not standard practice for the costs of braces for anyone under the age of 18 to be reimbursed under basic insurance. For more information about reimbursements, we recommend contacting your health insurer.

To maintain good oral health, it is important to have your teeth checked regularly by a dentist. Tandzorg Kralingen recommends visiting your dentist every six months for a check-up.

During the check-up, the dentist will examine your entire mouth, including your tongue and mucous membranes, as well as your teeth and gums. In some cases, photographs of your teeth may be necessary in order to make a proper diagnosis. After the check-up, the dentist will discuss the next steps with you and, if necessary, arrange follow-up appointments.

    Periodic inspection rates

    Are periodic check-ups reimbursed?

The reimbursement you receive for dental treatment depends on the terms of your health insurance policy. For insured persons under the age of 18, basic insurance covers a range of dental treatments, including regular check-ups. For insured persons over the age of 18, reimbursement depends on the specific terms of their health insurance policy. Therefore, we always advise you to check with your health insurer which treatments are covered in your case.

    Have your teeth checked preventively

Regular check-ups with your dentist or dental hygienist are important for preventing dental problems. This enables us to identify any issues with your teeth or mouth early on and address them promptly.

The dentist will carry out a dental check-up. They will draw up a treatment plan with you and, if necessary, refer you to a specialist, such as an oral surgeon or orthodontist.

Also check-ups when you have no complaints

Tandzorg Kralingen recommends regular dental check-ups, even if you are not experiencing any problems. Many dental diseases develop without causing any immediate discomfort.

    More information

    Costs and reimbursement of crowns

The cost of a crown depends on the type of crown, the material used, and the fees charged by the dental laboratory. Ask for a cost estimate before treatment begins. Our dentist can provide you with detailed advice and information.

Reimbursement for the placement of one or more crowns depends on your dental insurance policy. Contact your health insurer to find out which treatments are covered.

The treatment involves fitting crowns and bridges

This involves several steps. You will need to visit the dentist several times. In addition, crowns and bridges are made in a dental laboratory. This process takes one to two weeks. We have outlined the treatment steps below:

    1. Pre-treatment

Before a crown or bridge can be placed, the tooth must be ground down. This creates space around the tooth for the crown or bridge to be fitted. If necessary, a local anaesthetic will be administered.

    2. Your jaw imprint

During step two of the treatment, an impression of your jaw will be taken. This will be either a full jaw impression or an impression of the jaw where the ground tooth or molar is located. To take the impression, you will need to bite down on a tray containing impression material. The dental laboratory will use this impression to create a plaster model of your jaw. They will then use this model to create your crown or bridge.

    3. Your bite registration

A wax plate is used during bite registration to determine how your teeth fit together. An impression of the opposing jaw is taken to record the bite, which is required for the manufacture of the crown or bridge later on.

    4. Determining the colour

The location of the crown or bridge partly determines its colour. If a crown or bridge is to be placed at the front of your mouth, it will often have a white, tooth-coloured outer layer. You can discuss your desired colour with your dentist.

    5. Temporary protection for your ground tooth

To protect your ground tooth, you will be given a temporary crown. Please avoid eating hard or sticky foods, as these can damage or dislodge the temporary crown.

    6. Securing crowns or bridges

The final step of the treatment involves securing the crown or bridge. The dentist will place it in your mouth and position it over the prepared tooth or molar before securing it in place. This is done using a type of cement that sets extremely quickly.

    7. A superstructure

If your tooth does not provide enough support for a crown or bridge, your dentist will need to create a build-up. This build-up is placed in the root canal and can then be used to attach a crown or bridge.

    Client experiences

    What is a crown?

It is a cap that is placed over an implant or a ground-down tooth. They are usually made of metal or porcelain and cemented onto the implant or tooth. This means that you can use your teeth as normal, even if they have a crown.

When do I need a crown?

A crown may be necessary in the following cases:

    1. Insufficient support for a filling;
    2. To improve the appearance of your teeth.

    How long do crowns last?

How long do crowns last? This is one of the most common questions asked at the dentist’s. The lifespan of a crown depends on various factors, such as the material used and your oral hygiene routine. Nowadays, all crowns are made of durable materials, meaning the average crown lasts at least ten years. They are used as a long-lasting replacement for teeth.

When do I need a bridge?

If you are missing one or more teeth, we recommend getting a bridge. If you don’t, your remaining teeth may grow towards the empty space, causing them to become crooked. Having a bridge fitted is a good way to prevent this. Bridges ensure that:

    • You can chew better;
    • Your teeth are more aesthetically pleasing;
    • Teeth do not grow out and do not become crooked.

Are there different types of bridges?

There are several types, and your dentist will recommend the most suitable one for you. You can choose from a conventional bridge, a cantilever bridge or an etch bridge.

    The ordinary bridge

An ordinary bridge consists of a series of artificial elements, with the structure supported by two pillars and spanning an open space.

    The free-end bridge

In this type of bridge, the abutments are located on one side of the missing tooth or molar.

    The etching bridge

An etch bridge is mainly used when the teeth on either side of the gap are intact enough. The advantage of this type of bridge is that hardly any of the intact teeth need to be ground down. It is bonded to the inside of the teeth using metal attachment plates.

Tips for toothache or dental pain

If you have a toothache, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible, as treatment is necessary to provide long-lasting relief. In the meantime, here are a few tips to help relieve your toothache:

    • Take a painkiller to relieve the pain, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

    • Rinse your mouth with warm, lightly salted water or herbal tea.
    • Put some cloves in your mouth and chew them to temporarily relieve toothache.

I am very happy with my dentist, Kitty. After deliberating for a long time about switching dentists, I ended up at Kitty’s practice. After thoroughly cleaning my teeth due to periodontitis, which the previous dentist had not noticed, Kitty placed an implant in my lower jaw last year. Following a thorough explanation, the treatment began and the results were excellent. This year, I had a bridge fitted to my upper jaw. I am so satisfied! It’s a pleasant, no-nonsense practice. — Tineke Verhoeff

    More information about implants

    What is an implant?

It is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. The dentist then attaches a replacement tooth to the implant. Examples of these replacements include crowns, bridges and snap-on dentures. Implant-supported replacements are a functional, permanent solution that is indistinguishable from real teeth.

When should I have an implant fitted?

If you are missing one or more teeth, implants combined with a crown, bridge or prosthesis are a good way to fill the empty spaces. We fit implants in the following situations:

    • In the absence of a single tooth;
If you are missing a single tooth, the dentist will place a crown on the implant.
    • In the absence of multiple teeth;
If you have multiple missing teeth, the dentist will place a bridge on the implants. A bridge consists of multiple crowns that replace your missing teeth.
    • In the absence of all teeth;
When all your teeth are missing, the dentist will place two implants in your jawbone, which will be connected with a bar. An artificial or snap-on denture will then be clicked onto the implant. The denture replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw.

Are my teeth suitable for implants?

Implants can be placed in anyone who has finished growing. However, there are certain conditions you must meet:

    • There must be sufficient jawbone present;
During the first appointment, the implantologist will take an X-ray to assess this. If not, artificial bone can be added prior to or during the placement of the implants.
    • The gums around your natural teeth must be healthy;
If your implant dentist determines that your gums are unhealthy, you will need to undergo gum treatment before implants can be placed.
    • You must be prepared to clean your implants regularly, keep them as clean as possible and visit the dental hygienist.

Please note that certain habits, such as alcohol consumption and smoking, can negatively impact the success of the treatment.

    The treatment: placing implants

We place implants in the following manner:

    1. Before the dental implantologist begins treatment, you will be anaesthetised.
    2. They will make a small incision in your gum to expose the jawbone where the implant is to be placed.
    3. The implantologist then drills a hole in the jawbone and screws the implant into it.
    4. They then place a high or low cover cap on the implant. After suturing, a higher cover cap will protrude above the gums, while a lower cover cap will be hidden under them. The type of cap used depends on the treatment. The lower cap is replaced once the implant has fused with the jawbone. This process often takes several months.
    5. Once the implant has been placed, the dental implantologist sutures the gums.
    6. Two weeks later, an appointment is made to remove the sutures.

If you require more than one implant, we prefer to place them all at the same time.

    Experiences

I have always been afraid of the dentist. However, since I started going to Tandzorg Kralingen, my fear has completely disappeared. They do everything they can to ensure you don’t feel any pain, and they keep you informed throughout your treatment.

    Mirko

I have had a very good experience with the dentist. They put you at ease and provide clear information about the treatment. In short, they’re just good!

    Stephen

I have been a patient for many years and have always been very satisfied. He is a dedicated dentist who thinks along with you and puts you at ease. The practice is pleasant and the assistants are friendly!

    Linda

    After the treatment

Once the implants have been placed, any pain and swelling will be minimal, enabling you to resume your normal routine the following day. If your teeth are sensitive afterwards, you can, of course, take painkillers. Your dental implantologist will be able to advise you in detail on the best measures to take.
When you leave our practice after treatment, we will always provide you with a temporary solution for your mouth. This means that you will never leave our practice with a missing tooth.

    Aftercare

Maintaining good oral hygiene, undergoing thorough cleaning and attending regular check-ups with the dentist are important after placement. Your dental implantologist will arrange an appointment to assess your teeth after treatment. He will check:

    • The health of your gums;
    • The condition of the jawbone surrounding the implant(s);
    • The status of the crown, bridge, or artificial or snap-on denture.

    Implant costs

The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) sets nationwide rates for dental care. The cost of treatment depends on the number of implants required and your health insurance policy. Following your initial consultation, you will receive a personalised treatment plan, including a cost estimate. This plan provides a clear overview of the costs of your treatment.
The most common implant treatments and their corresponding prices set by the NZa are listed below.

    Code Behandeling Kosten
J001 Overhead costs for implant and peri-implantitis surgery € 199,68
    J002 Pre-implantological surgery overhead costs € 113,01

    Frequently asked questions about implants

We often receive questions from patients about implants. Below, we have compiled and answered the most frequently asked questions.

    Is implant treatment painful?

You will be given a local anaesthetic beforehand. This means that you won’t feel any pain during the procedure.

How long does the implant treatment take?

The duration depends on the complexity of the procedure and the number of implants required. We will draw up a treatment plan in advance, after which the implantologist will be able to provide more information about the expected duration. Once an implant has been placed, it takes between six weeks and several months for it to heal. After that, we can fit the crown, bridge or snap-on denture.

What should I bear in mind following the treatment?

You may experience swelling and discolouration after the treatment. You may also experience some pain afterwards, for which you will be given medication. These symptoms are normal. However, if you have any concerns about your recovery, you can always contact the implantologist.

Kitty van Luijk: she is a fantastic dentist: very professional and pleasant to deal with. I was never afraid of the dentist, but I developed severe anxiety at some point. In fact, I didn’t go for three years. When I started having problems, I had to go, of course. I switched to Kitty, whose approach of asking if I was OK and if I was in pain put me at ease and helped me to overcome my fear. The practice isn’t close to where I live, but I’m happy to make the trip. — Cora Ouwendijk

    Plate prostheses

Rest assured that at Tandzorg Kralingen, you will be treated by dentists who adhere to the highest quality and professional standards.

Front view of the plate prosthesis

Side view of a plate prosthesis

    Frame protheses

A frame prosthesis is a metal frame with gum-coloured resin attached to it. Artificial teeth are then placed on the resin. There are two ways in which frame prostheses can be fitted in your mouth: with metal anchors that clamp onto teeth, or with a clasp.

A frame prosthesis fixed to crowns

What are the differences between plate and frame prostheses?

Although a plate prosthesis is cheaper to manufacture than a frame prosthesis, it has a number of disadvantages. A plate prosthesis rests on the gums, which can cause discomfort when pressure is exerted on them during chewing. In contrast, a frame prosthesis largely rests on real teeth, sparing the gums during chewing. Additionally, food debris is more likely to become trapped under a plate denture.

The best prosthesis solution varies from person to person. We recommend consulting a dentist when choosing a prosthesis.

What does the treatment process entail?

The process of creating a dental prosthesis requires around five to six visits to the dentist. Production of a frame prosthesis takes several weeks longer than production of a plate prosthesis. The steps are outlined below.

    1. Making space for the denture

The dentist may need to grind down some of your molars to create enough space for the denture frame. The way in which teeth are ground down depends on the type of denture.

    2. Taking an imprint

During the second step, an impression of the teeth is taken using an impression tray. Based on this impression, the dental laboratory can create a plaster model, from which an impression tray made of synthetic resin is produced. This tray is then used to create an even more precise plaster model.

    3. Manufacturing the prosthesis

The plate or frame prosthesis is then manufactured using the synthetic resin plaster model.

    Cleaning the prosthesis

As food debris can easily become trapped in dentures, it is advisable to clean them daily with a specialised cleaning agent. Toothpaste should not be used. Our specialists can provide you with more information on this.

    Price of porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are more expensive than composite veneers. However, porcelain is a very durable material that retains its attractive appearance for longer. Two short appointments are needed to fit porcelain veneers.

    Price of composite veneers

Composite veneers are cheaper than porcelain veneers due to the cost and lifespan of the material. Additionally, composite veneers can be fitted in just one appointment.

    Veneers reimbursed

Most insurers reimburse some of the cost of veneers through supplementary dental insurance. The current basic package does not cover the cost of veneers. However, if you have supplementary dental insurance, your insurer will usually reimburse 70–80% of the cost. Contact your health insurer to find out the exact amount you will be reimbursed.

Get veneers for a complete, radiant smile!

What is the process for getting veneers?

The treatment method for veneers varies depending on the material used. A composite veneer can be applied in a single treatment, whereas a porcelain veneer requires at least two visits to the dentist, since the veneer must be made by a dental laboratory. Read about our patients’ experiences with veneers on the Veneer Experiences page.

    Treatment with composite veneers

The treatment for a composite veneer involves the following steps:

    1. Choosing the colour of the veneer
Your dentist will consult with you to determine the right colour. In many cases, they can show you the effect of your chosen colour immediately.
    2. Grinding the tooth
If necessary, they will grind away a thin layer of the tooth’s surface to create space for the veneer.
    3. Shaping the veneer
After grinding, the dentist will treat the tooth with acid and apply an adhesive layer. The composite veneer is then placed on top of this.
    4. Shaping the veneer
During the final step of the treatment, the dentist shapes the composite veneer into the correct form. They then shine a blue light on it to harden the composite.

    Porcelain veneers treatment

Treatment for porcelain veneers is different and consists of the following steps:

    1. Choosing the colour of the veneer
The dentist will consult with you again to determine the right colour. The veneer will then be manufactured by the dental laboratory.
    2. Grinding the tooth
When using a porcelain veneer, the dentist often has to grind away more of the tooth than with a composite veneer, including the enamel. This is because a porcelain veneer must be at least half a millimetre thick.
    3. Shaping the veneer
The dentist takes an impression of the tooth, after which the veneer is custom-made by the dental laboratory.
    4. Applying the veneer
Once the veneer has been manufactured, you will need to come to the practice for a second appointment. During this appointment, the dentist will bond the veneer to the tooth using an adhesive.

But what exactly is a veneer?

A veneer can be made from a tooth-coloured composite filling material or porcelain. Dentists can use both to improve the appearance of teeth by bonding them to real teeth.

    Veneer made of porcelain

Porcelain veneers have the advantage of being much less susceptible to staining from coffee and tea than composite veneers, for example. Porcelain veneers also tend to produce a more aesthetically pleasing end result.

    Composite veneer

Composite veneers require less of the natural tooth to be ground away than porcelain veneers. The outcome of composite veneers is also more predictable.

What are the costs of veneers?

The material used for the veneer has a significant impact on the final cost. For example, the cost of a composite veneer is considerably lower than that of a porcelain veneer. The cost of a porcelain veneer is higher than that of a composite veneer due to the material used and the labour-intensive work of the dental laboratory. You can expect the following costs:

    Description Costs of veneers
    Composite veneers € 100,- – € 150,- per tooth
    Porcelain veneers € 450,- – € 900,- per tooth

Make sure you are well informed and ask your dentist for a cost estimate for the veneer(s). You can find more information about veneer costs on the Veneer Costs page.

    Reimbursement for veneers

Basic insurance does not cover the placement of veneers. Do you have additional insurance? If so, you may be entitled to full or partial reimbursement. Contact your health insurer for more information.

    Frequently asked questions about veneers

We have answered a number of frequently asked questions about veneers below. If you cannot find the answer to your question below, please feel free to contact us.

    How long do veneers last?

On average, a veneer lasts between five and ten years. However, this depends on your lifestyle: for example, discolouration occurs more quickly if you drink coffee or tea or smoke. Veneers also wear out or become damaged more quickly if you grind your teeth or bite your nails.

    Is veneering suitable for everyone?

Provided your gums are healthy, it is usually possible to have veneers fitted. However, veneers are not recommended for people who bite their nails or grind their teeth, as this can cause them to wear down and become damaged more quickly.

Can I eat anything with a veneer?

With a veneer, you can eat and bite normally. However, you should be careful when biting hard things, such as nuts, sour candies, or pens.

Is it painful to have a veneer placed?

Having a veneer placed is usually painless. For example, when grinding enamel, the dentist does not go as deep as when drilling a tooth. However, it is sometimes necessary to repair your tooth first. If this is the case, you can be treated under local anaesthetic.

Are there any risks involved in placing veneers?

The tooth may be slightly more sensitive to temperature changes immediately after the veneer is placed, but veneers do not normally cause any complications or risks.

    Crown

A crown is a cap made of metal and/or porcelain that fits precisely over a ground-down tooth. The cap is then cemented onto the tooth. A crown restores the tooth’s original shape and function. Full ceramic crowns, in particular, are indistinguishable from natural teeth.

    Bridge

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It is attached to two or more abutments. These are teeth that have been ground down on either side of the gap left by the missing tooth or molar. A bridge consists of two or more crowns that fit onto the abutments, as well as a bridge section — also known as a ‘dummy’. This contains one or more artificial teeth and/or molars that are placed in the gap.

Find out more about crowns and bridges.

    Veneers

Veneers can be used for a variety of reasons to improve the appearance of teeth. For example, they can be used to close gaps, repair broken teeth or cover discolouration. Read more about veneers and view a number of before-and-after photos.

    Composite veneer

When applying a composite veneer, the dentist usually needs to grind away less of the natural tooth than with a porcelain veneer, and the cost is much lower. This is mainly due to the material used and the time it takes the dentist to place a composite veneer. Composite veneers only require one visit to the dentist.

    Porcelain veneer

The process of making a porcelain veneer is much more labour-intensive than that of a composite veneer. The cost of the material and the labour involved in the work of the dental laboratory mean that a porcelain veneer is more expensive. However, porcelain veneers have the advantage of being much less sensitive to stains from coffee and tea, for example. In addition, porcelain veneers often produce a more aesthetically pleasing end result.

    Lumineers

Would you like to enhance your smile without removing any healthy tooth tissue? If so, Lumineers treatment could be right for you. Lumineers are a revolutionary way to achieve beautiful white teeth and a radiant smile. These ultra-thin porcelain veneers give you beautifully straight, white teeth.
